LOCAL STORIES \/ GLOBAL PRACTICES<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Medell\u00edn International\u00a0Art Encounter 2015,\u00a0MDE15<\/h3>\n

The theme of Local Stories\/Global\u00a0Practices<\/em> has been conceived to create a\u00a0space of reflection and engagement with the\u00a0recent transformation of Medell\u00edn since the\u00a0turn of the millennium. Medell\u00edn, considered\u00a0to be a progressive Latin American city that\u00a0has implemented innovative programs to\u00a0stimulate social and urban development, is\u00a0part of a larger picture. While the results of\u00a0these processes are real and tangible, the\u00a0dynamics they have generated are particularly\u00a0complex from an ethical standpoint. In order\u00a0to understand their implications we propose\u00a0to focus on these processes of change and\u00a0explore them through commissioned projects,\u00a0works of artists and other socially oriented\u00a0initiatives, sometimes inserted in spaces\u00a0beyond the artistic field.<\/p>\n

MDE15 inserts itself in the social fabric\u00a0of the city while sharing stories, experiences\u00a0and practices from elsewhere in the\u00a0world. Transformative changes can elicit\u00a0psychological, physical and social responses\u00a0that range from issues of trust and security to\u00a0economic well-being. The stories that result\u00a0from observations and from the direct experiences\u00a0of people in communities, often address\u00a0the coping mechanisms that are required\u00a0to survive and flourish amid those changes,\u00a0which often occur at a pace that outstrips the\u00a0citizens and society\u2019s ability to assimilate\u00a0them. MDE15 aims at focusing on the unsaid\u00a0and the less visible aspects of the everyday,\u00a0such as memory, the past, the persistence of\u00a0structural problems, but also the resilience of\u00a0life in the city. It also relies on the potential of\u00a0art to harness the capacity of individual and\u00a0collective imagination to re-signify complex\u00a0situations.<\/p>\n

It is in this context and in the context of a\u00a0critical standpoint in which the definition of\u00a0artistic practice is constantly being challenged,\u00a0that the MDE15 unfolds.<\/p>\n

Curatorial axes:<\/strong> the selection of artistic practices\u00a0aims to display some aspects such as:<\/p>\n

  1. Social topography and power dynamics as\u00a0premises to reflect on the social fabric of the
    \ncity and take part in it.<\/li>\n
  2. Art and culture as repertoires of tactics of\u00a0resistance and re-appropriation.<\/li>\n
  3. Fringe practices, spanning between art,\u00a0architecture and urbanism addressing critical\u00a0issues and questioning ways of living in the city.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
