Jorge Julián Aristizábal

Jorge Julián Aristizabal was born in 1962 in Medellin (Colombia), where he still lives. He received his BFA from the School of Art and Design Otis Parsons, based in Los Angeles, California (USA), and the degree of Master from the Goldsmiths College (London, England).

His work has been included in exhibitions such as the VII Biennial of Bogota, Museum of Modern Art of Bogota (Colombia), also in ‘Magical Realism: Figurative Art of the 90’s in Colombia’, the Barbican Centre (England), and Queens International, Queens Museum of Contemporary Art (USA).

Aristizabal has had numerous solo exhibitions including: `El canario y el jabali, láminas en la memoria de Jorge Julián Aristizábal’ (The Canary and the Boar, pictures in the memory of Jorge Julian Aristizabal), exhibited at the Museum of Antioquia, the Barranquilla Museum of Modern Art and the Bucaramanga Museum of Modern Art (Colombia). ‘Until Now Drawings 97/07’ opened in 2007 at the Contemporary Art Center of Eafit University (Colombia), during this show he published a book with his drawings from the last 10 years.

During MDE11, Jorge Julian participate with ‘Photo Press’, a series that consists of 80 original photographs from different newspapers. These images are worked with by applying many layers of acrylic and are subsequently reduced to simple silhouettes in black and white graphics.

His intention is to offer the public the possibility of mentally re-making each photograph, freely interpreting it based on their own memories and experiences. To aid in this re-interpretation process he also offers a caption for each image which describes what happened.
