Cova Macías

Cova Macías was born in 1976 in Oviedo, Spain. Her artistic output over the past nine years has sought to examine processes relating to the construction of identity in the most vulnerable and conflictive periods of our lives, such as adolescence and youth.

Her video work intimately explores the creation of identity, creating a series of portraits of her young protagonists and collaborators.

At MDE11 Cova Macías will be presenting a new documentary video project. Here she seeks to explore the ability of young people from Medellin to tackle adverse pressure and difficult situations.

Portraits and road maps of the lives that the city’s young people share with the artist and the medium of video their biographical and subjective projections. Her work is interwoven with the learning experiences of these young people, all of whom are involved in educational programs which seek to prevent social exclusion.

Through her emphasis on dialog with her protagonists, Cova designs a participative structure in which these young participants allow us, through their testimonies, a glimpse of their perspectives on social matters.

She is driven by a desire for interpersonal encounter, empathic relations, a fragmented approach to other forms of understanding and constructing the world, as well as the need give form to a new, intimate working experience.

“This could be described as the document of an interpersonal relationship, of human encounter, of giving form to this vital experience in order to then transcend it”, in Cova Macía’s words.
