Frente 3 de Fevereiro

The group was born in São Paulo (Brazil) following the murder of a young black man named Flavio Sant’Ana at the hands of the Military Police in 2004. Each of the members of Frente 3 de Febrero (Spanish translation) comes from different fields of knowledge. They focus their work on research and artistic intervention related to racism in Brazilian society, creating new forms of reading and contextualizing the fragmented information produced by the mass media.

New forms of protest on the subject of racial issues are the basis of artistic interventions in the group, a medium that allows them to regain the artistic legacy of generations that thought of ways to interact with urban space, the historical struggle and resistance of Afro-Brazilian culture.

Their project aims to establish a forum for exchange, for experiencing and reflecting on the past and future of Latin American societies. We will construct a space based on the virtual connection between experiences of military or police occupation of “favelas” in Haiti, Rio de Janeiro and Medellin.

To reflect on these issues, during MDE11, Frente 3 de Febrero 3 proposes obtaining a better understanding of the experience of Medellin from interviews, exchanges and discussions. Based on these interactions, they will invite groups and individuals in the city to a public discussion with the aim of discussing and proposing urban interventions in public space. Furthermore, they will develop an audiovisual, musical and graphic production as a result of the project.

Their work in the city of Medellin has a strong educational aspect attached to their artwork. The challenge in MDE11 is to build a collaborative relationship with communities, always keeping in mind the “ephemeral characteristic of art, without any paternalistic interpretations.”
